Tow Behind And Three Point Hitch Mount Logsplitters

We have several models of logsplitter available including 5 models of engine powered tow behind models, and a three point hitch mount model that mounts on either category 1 or 2 three point hitches. All models can be used either as vertical or horizonal splitters. All the models are priced reasonably, and with low cycle times they are also fast and efficient. Five engine powered models are available with splitting forces up to 34 tons. The three point hitch mount model will give you the most splitting forces of about 20 tons; this model is powered by the hydraulics on your tractor (you will need a place to plug in two hoses on the back of your tractor). Splitting force varies with the size of the tractor and pressure of the system; see the cautions and specifications for the model SPLS400197 listed below. These units are American made and parts if ever needed are readily available.

  • How To Calculate Cycle Time On The Logsplitters

  • Formula is: 3.1416 x cylinder rod radius squared x Length of cylinder = Volume measured in Cubic Inches

  • Cubic Inches convert to Gallons at 231 cubic inches per one gallon.

  • The volume in gallons will be the volume that fills the cylinder on the extension stroke. Dividing the output of either your tractor's hydraulic pump divided by the volume required when extending the cylinder will give you the time for the stroke on extension, and then multiply that by 2 for total cycle time and this will give you a good measurement for cycle time.

  • Here is an example for the model 310 on our web page: www.wikco.com/wood.html

  • 3.1416 x 4 inch cylinder rod diameter divided by 2 = 2 and then squared = 4 x length of cylinder (24 inches) = 301.44 cubic inches

  • 301.44 cubic inches divided by 231 cubic inches = 1.3 gallons volume in cylinder

  • Now lets use the minimum 10 gallons per minute required to efficiently operate this unit - so 1.3 gallons of volume on the cylinder extension stroke divided by 10 gallons per minute pumping capacity = .13 minutes, 60 seconds per minute x .13 = 7.8 seconds for the extension stroke at that volume, multiply x 2 = 15.6 seconds total cycle time, this will give you a good estimate to compare different models by.

  • The last variable is pressure. On the logsplitters we also give the pressure required from the pump as well. If your pump also meets the minimum pressure requirement, then this estimate will be accurate.

  • An increase in gallons per minute will decrease cycle time, a decrease in gpm will increase cycle time, and again you want to be above the minimum recommended shown for each model

  • If your hydraulic capacity doesnot meet the minimum we show then you need to look at a different model of splitter from our list to match to your tractor, or consider an engine powered model.

  • Three Point Hitch Mounted Model

  • Model SPLS400197: Three point hitch mount logsplitter, mounts on tractors with category 1 or 2 three point hitches, tractors with category 1 are usally between 18 hp and 40 hp, tractors with category 2 hitches are usually between 45 to 75 or 100 hp

  • Splitting Force: Splitting force and cycle time depends upon the tractor hydraulic pressure. Tractor hydraulic system should be capable of delivering 6 to 25 gpm of oil at 1500 to 2500 psi for adequate splitting force and speed. Tractor must be equiped with a four-way valve (for double-acting cylinders) and remote hydraulic outlets. Hoses to the tractor are not included.

  • Tractor Pressures: 2500-3200 psi, maximum cylinder diameter is 4 inches, maximum force would be 20.0 tons, up to 2500 psi, maximum cylinder diameter is 4 1/2 inches, maximum force is 19.9 tons.
  • Caution: This log splitter is designed for tractors with pressure settings under 3200 psi. Warranty will be voided if used on tractors that exceed pressure settings of 3200 psi. Do not exceed the pressure rating of the cylinder and valve manufacturers
